In Udaan I've worked only as a facilitator: Anurag Kashyap  [ Posted on 28 Jun 2010 ]
Udaan, India’s first official entry to Cannes in 15 years, is due for commercial release in cinema halls on July 16. This is the story of a small town boy who finds himself pulled between an authoritarian father and his boarding school education. The movie was well received among critics at Cannes, winning a standing ovation in Uncertain Regard category.

Interview Excerpts:
What were the lessons that you picked up from your Cannes experience?

I realised that this is big market for films, although not always based on merit. And that there is scope to sell films abroad that need not appeal to the Indian diaspora. You can make films that you believe in and explore here at Cannes if there is a market audience for it.

Do you think the West sees Bollywood as a typecast?

Absolutely. The foreign reviewers have different expectations from Indian or Bollywood cinema. They don’t see us as serious cinema. Their perception of Indian cinema is still one of a potboiler masala, with high power emotions and song & dance. We have to change that perception. The new line of Indian directors has to change that.

Were you disappointed by the lack of response to Bollywood glitterati at Udaan’s filming at Cannes?

See that has not become an old issue. I think we had high expectations from our Bollywood brethren there but I also realise that we also hadn’t approached them to come over. So... well it is a non-issue now.

You have a series of projects lined up, from a movie on politics to Bombay Velvet with Danny Boyle and, of course, Doga... how do you manage this multi tasking?

I don’t. I take up one thing at a time. But sections of the media pick up a future project and plays upon it so heavily that it often becomes a liability. Any movie project requires a lot of hardwork to chart out its logistics, script and time scheduling. All that requires a minimum of one and half years to start the work on ground. It is like a five-year plan (laughs), a panch-varshiya yojna, chalti rahti hai...
