Movie Review : 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai' [ Posted on 31 Jul 2010 ]
Once Upon A Time in Mumbai is a movie that cannot really be disliked. Director Milan Luthra gives his audience a great storyline with commendable acting by his cast that consists of Ajay Devgn, Kangana Ranaut, Emraan Hashmi , Prachi Desai and Randeep Hooda.
The film is set in the 70s and 80s and almost resonates that era which was most probably the inspiration for the movie. The era when smuggler Haji Mastan and protege Dawood Ibrahim had just about started their reign of the Mumbai underworld. Stories about gangsters pitted against each other are nothing new. Bollywood has had plenty of stories about rival gangsters – one demigod leader and the other his pupil who suddenly becomes the leader’s arch enemy, and they get into gun fires and fisticuffs.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbai has Ajay Devgan as Sultan who is a smuggler who battles it out with his protégé Emraan Hashmi who plays Shoaib. The two gangsters disagree about trading in drugs and alcohol – Sultan finds it ethically and morally wrong, while Shoaib believes there are no moral issues in trade. Hence, begins a déjà vu for the audience who might just feel that the movie has been lifted from the real-life happenstances of Mumbai.
The movie is a masterpiece of performances. The audience will be glad to see Ajay Devgan as Sultan. Even though he has acted in gangster movies before and has acted as a mob king before, his acting in this film is fresh. He does not borrow from his past performances. Randeep Hooda’s role as a cop is intense and impressive. However, Hashmi disappoints. He is too gentle for a role that required more aggressiveness. Kangana Ranaut and Prachi Desai too give likeable performances – one who is the gangster’s moll, while the other who is head-over-heels in love with Shoaib. Both characters are like anchors for Shoaib and Sultan.
For a movie from the gangster genre, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai hardly has any violence. Luthra extracts spellbinding performances from the actors and writer Rajat Aroraa’s story is very beautifully directed. The background score of the movie is great, cinematography, art direction and styling are commendable. Technically, the film has an edge over others. However, the screenplay is a little half-baked. All-in-all the movie is fantastic. |
